Malta’s Most Unexpected Boat Race: Il-Regatta Tar-Riħ!

The Humble Beginnings

It was a sunny day in Valletta, and the Grand Harbour was buzzin’ with excitement for Malta’s annual boat race. But dis year, the organizers had a saucy twist in store – the competition was not about speed, but about unpredictability – dubbed “Il-Regatta Tar-Riħ” (The Wind Regatta).

The Unlikely Crew

We had a bunch of characters in dis one. Carmenu, the skipper from Gozo, who’d never sailed without his trusty talisman, a rabbit’s foot drenched in ħobż biż-żejt. Follow that with Bernardetta, a retired ballerina turned sailor from Mdina, who insisted on performing a pirouette before hoistin’ the sails. And then there was Żebbuġ, a bloke so large they used him as a human anchor for the boat!

The Calamitous Course

The course was simple: start from Valletta, round Comino twice, gobble down a plate of steamin’ pastizzi at each check-point, and finish back in the harbour where a feast awaits with enough fenkata (rabbit stew) to feed an army.

Plot Twist Aboard!

Just as the starting gun blared, Każin, the band club point man, accidentally fired a firework into Żebbuġ’s ample lap, causing him to jump overboard and nearly capsize the boat!

“Uwejja, paċenzja ħabib,” Carmenu said, pulling Żebbuġ back aboard using a fishing rod, while Bernardetta danced a quick jive to balance the vessel. Kollox went back to normal… or did it?

The Mysterious Maltese Falcon

As they rounded Comino for the first time, a Maltese Falcon swooped down, nicking the talisman right off Carmenu’s neck!

“Without that talisman, this wind is like a blown kiss from a three-teethed nanna,” panicked Carmenu, as the sails flapped about.

Mela, with the wind against them and Żebbuġ anxious about his unintended swim, things seemed dire.

The Turn of Tides

But Malta, being Malta, fate had another laugh. A gaggle of tourists on jet skis mistook the race for a new extreme sport and joined in. Their waves pushed our oddball boat all the way back to Valletta!

Victorious Vittles

To the shock of the crowd, Carmenu and his quirky crew stumbled across the finish line first. They were greeted with thunderous applause and an immediate offer for a new reality TV show: “Sailors Got Talent.” With the trophy in hand, Carmenu had one thing to say:

“Mela, who needs a talisman when you got winds like these and a Maltese falcon to keep things lively!”

Interactive Finish: Readers Poll

Calling all readers! Will you tune in for “Sailors Got Talent”? Vote now!

  • Oh my gawd, YES! I need more of Żebbuġ’s antics.
  • Maybe, if they promise to broadcast Bernardetta’s pirouettes in slow-mo.
  • No thanks, I’ll stick to watching the waves hit the shore at Għadira Bay.

A Closing Note

And so, the “Il-Regatta Tar-Riħ” concluded with a bang, proving that in Malta, you don’t just ride the waves—you dance, eat, and embrace the chaos of it all. Stay tuned for more wobbly water adventures!
